Section II- Proposal Summary

1. The Academy seeks to create a Media Arts Program for youth participating in our summer enrichment program. The program will introduce youth grades K thru 5th to media concepts including filmmaking, writing for media outlets, and editing their own stories. Throughout the summer months, youth will create a media project, either film or mixed media, which will serve as a documentary of their lives. They will share their finished project with other children in the summer program, their families, and members of the community at a showcase at the end of camp.

Many youth in our program come from low-income families who do not have access to the same resources that youth in higher socioeconomic statuses have available to them. Many children in our program do not realize their full potential because of their life situations. They also have little or no access to technology. This program would provide youth with a new skill set which would set them apart from their peers and allow them to realize that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to do.

Throughout the program, youth will learn how to take a closer look at their lives and their neighborhood while expressing their views in their own words. They will gain valuable skills pertaining to filmmaking which will allow them to excel above their peers. Most importantly, youth will be able to break down stereotypes of their community and show off their many talents as intelligent and future leaders of our society.

2. Youth will learn the many facets of media arts including script writing, how to use a camera, different types of shots, and using editing software to create a finished product.

They will improve their writing skills as well and using artistic expression to create a film. Through the Media Arts Program, they will improve and develop essential social skills through interactions with other children. They will learn to respect one another and their community as well as learn the value of teamwork. Youth will gain self confidence by creating a finished product that they can claim as their own work and show to their peers, families and members of the community. Finally, they will expand self-awareness by using moving images to express their feelings, views, and individuality.

3. The facilities used for this proposed program will include one multipurpose room, a computer lab, and the outdoor neighborhood located in and around The Academy.

4. Thirty-three youth participants enrolled in The Academy’s Summer Camp will be served by this program.

5. The program will last approximately 6 ½ weeks throughout the summer.

     Total Months: 2 months

Anticipated Starting Date: July 6, 2010

Anticipated Ending Date: August 13, 2010

6. There will be no fees or charges for this program.

7. The Media Arts Program will shed light on the Hunting Park area of North Philadelphia. Many of the youth in our program come from Latino families where parents have little or no knowledge of the English language. This program will allow youth to address cultural barriers that exist amongst their community and learn through the arts. This program will benefit the community by allowing youth to document their neighborhood and its rich culture in their own words and images.

8. Training and instruction will be provided by a professional in the media industry. The children will learn the basics of filmmaking, including how to use a camera, types of camera shots, lighting and sound elements. They will also be introduced to storyboarding which will improve their writing and analytical skills. Furthermore, youth will learn how to edit their media project using computer software which will increase their technological awareness and capabilities.
